Our Story

"On March 25, 1917, seven young Jewish women who exemplified self-confidence and the willingness to take a chance, founded a new sorority at Cornell University. The name chosen, Sigma Delta Tau. Most of the seven had experienced the subtle, but very real, discrimination practiced against religious minorities by many Greek organizations at the time.

In response to the doors closed in front of them, and as a way to meet their own social and housing needs, these young women established a sorority which would respect the individuality of its members for years to come. The personal growth and social development of each individual was the basis upon which the new organization would be built."

Sigma Delta Tau is a sorority accepting of all women regardless of religion or ethnicity. This belief, instilled in us through the ideals of our founders, encourages us to accept diversity into our sorority. Our founders have encouraged us to continue to be empowered women-- and to empower others. Sigma Delta Tau’s tagline, “Empowering Women,” inspires our members to be confident, smart, and courageous leaders, both on and off campus. Sigma Delta Tau provides women with a strong sense of sisterhood, genuine friendship, and an amazing support system. At a large university, SDT understands that Rutgers is too big to take on alone!

Our sorority holds many identifiers. Our motto is "Patriae Multae Spes Una" which means "One Hope of Many People." Our colors are Cafe Au Lait and Old Blue. Our badge/symbol is the jeweled torch. Our mascot is the teddy bear. Our flower is the golden tea rose. Lastly, our crest that holds our motto, torch, and colors.
